## Probable cause

A POWER LOSS FOR UNDETERMINED REASONS. A FACTOR WAS: THE LACK OF SUITABLE TERRAIN FOR THE FORCED LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(partial) - nonmechanical, maneuvering - aerial application
  - reason for occurrence undetermined (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with object, descent
  - object - tree(s)
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS FLUSHING THE HOPPER WITH WATER. HE MADE A PASS OVER A FIELD WITH THE SPRAY BOOM OFF. AS HE PULLED UP TO CLEAR A WIRE, HE SWITCHED THE SPRAY BOOM ON. HE INITIATED A DESCENT INTO AN ADJOINING FIELD AND AS HE STARTED THE ROUNDOUT, THE AIRPLANE CONTINUED DESCENDING. HE ADDED FULL POWER BUT THE ENGINE DID NOT RESPOND. THE AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN ON THE GROUND, THEN LIFTED OFF. THE PILOT HAD INSUFFICIENT ALTITUDE TO CLEAR A KNOLL AT THE END OF THE FIELD, SO HE PULLED THE NOSE UP AND THE AIRPLANE COLLIDED WITH TREES. THREE GROUND WITNESSES REPORTED HEARING A BANG, AN EXPLOSION, OR BACKFIRE. THEN ENGINE WAS LATER FUNCTIONALLY TESTED AND IT OPERATED SATISFACTORILY.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930428011049A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930428011049A), Apr 28, 1993: Scwzer G164A, Truman, AR, Substantial damage. On pull up during water spray run to flush spray tank struck trees. Reported powerloss but engine ran after accident

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
