## Probable cause

FAILURE OF THE PILOT IN COMMAND TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL. A FACTOR WAS: A QUARTERING TAILWIND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - weather condition - tailwind (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

THE PILOT MADE A WHEELS LANDING ON RUNWAY 03, TOUCHING DOWN 1,100 FEET BEYOND THE RUNWAY THRESHOLD. AFTER ROLLING APPROXIMATELY 700 FEET, THE PILOT ENCOUNTERED A LEFT QUARTERING TAILWIND AND THE AIRPLANE BEGAN TO VEER TO THE LEFT. RIGHT RUDDER AND BRAKE WAS APPLIED BUT THIS WAS INEFFECTIVE. THE RIGHT WING TIP CONTACTED THE GROUND, CAUSING THE AIRPLANE TO GROUND LOOP AND NOSE OVER.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930717024299A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930717024299A), Jul 17, 1993: Cessna 305A, Belen, NM, Substantial damage. Landed in gusty quartering tailwind. Weathervaned into wind. Ground looped and nosed over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
