The captain reported that a few minutes later, when the aircraft was climbing through 4,000 feet ASL, he heard an explosion in the engine compartment, after which the Ng rapidly decreased below 50%, and the ITT increased through 800 Degrees Centigrade. The captain then shut down and secured the engine, and made a successful landing at Tinson Pen Aerodrome. There were no injuries, and no further damage to the aircraft. Initial examination of the engine, Pratt and Whitney PT6A-114A, Serial Number PCE0949, by Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) Airworthiness Inspector revealed that the power turbine disc and the compressor turbine disc were both extensively damaged. The inlet/nozzle guides for both turbines were also damaged. There was no other damage to the aircraft, and no obvious cause of the damage to the engine. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of Jamaica.
