## Probable cause

The pilot did not maintain directional control of the airplane during landing, which resulted in a runway excursion.

## Findings

NTSB's coded findings; those marked are part of the probable cause.

## Analysis

According to the operator, the pilot performed a normal landing in the tailwheel-equipped airplane. During the rollout, the airplane began to veer to the left, and the pilot attempted unsuccessfully to arrest the turn by applying right rudder and right brake. The airplane continued off the left side of the runway and struck a ditch, resulting in substantial damage to the right wing. Postaccident examination of the wreckage did not reveal any preexisting mechanical anomalies with the airplane.

## Factual narrative

According to the operator, the pilot performed a normal landing in the tail-wheel equipped airplane. During the subsequent rollout, the airplane began to veer to the left and the pilot attempted unsuccessfully to arrest the turn by applying right rudder and right brake. The airplane continued until it departed the runway and struck a ditch approximately 40 feet beyond the left side of the runway, resulting in substantial damage to the right wing. Postaccident examination of the wreckage by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector did not reveal any preexisting mechanical anomalies with the airplane.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
