## Probable cause

THE TOTAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER AS A RESULT OF WATER CONTAMINATION OF THE FUEL SUPPLY. A FACTOR WAS THE UNSUITABLE TERRAIN IN WHICH THE PILOT HAD TO MAKE THE FORCED LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, maneuvering - aerial application
  - fuel system,tank - contamination (cause)
  - aircraft preflight - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll

## Analysis

A COMMERICAL PILOT WAS MANEUVERING HIS AIRPLANE DURING AN AERIAL APPLICATION FLIGHT, WHEN HE EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE LOSS OF ENGINE POWER. ON SITE INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE FUEL WAS CONTAMINATED WITH WATER. SUITABLE TERRAIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE FORCED LANDING.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900430013159A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900430013159A), Apr 30, 1990: Cessna A188B, Perry, TX, Substantial damage. Engine quit on ag operation. Crash landed in rough ground. Found water in fuel.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
