## Probable cause

STUDENT PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL AND PROPER ALIGNMENT WITH TIMELY MANNER AFTER A BOUNCED LANDING. A FACTOR IN THE ACCIDENT WAS THE PRESENCE OF A RIGHT QUARTERING HEADWIND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, landing - flare/touchdown
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - proper alignment - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - recovery from bounced landing - improper, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - go-around - delayed, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing - aborted
  - terrain condition - ditch

## Analysis

THE AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN SLIGHTLY RIGHT OF THE CENTERLINE, WITH A RIGHT QUARTERING HEADWIND, BOUNCED, AND BEGAN TO FLOAT WHILE DRIFTING TO THE RIGHT. THE STUDENT PILOT'S ATTEMPTS TO CORRECT THE RIGHT DRIFT WERE NOT EFFECTIVE AND THE AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN THE SECOND TIME ON THE GRASS, RIGHT OF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT, WHO WAS ON HIS SECOND SUPERVISED SOLO, SAW THAT HE WAS APPROACHING A DITCH AND APPLIED FULL POWER IN AN ATTEMPT TO CLEAR IT. THE AIRPLANE SUBSEQUENTLY COLLIDED WITH THE DITCH.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
