## Probable cause

THE FAILURE OF A WORN RUDDER ADJUSTMENT BAR. A FACTOR WAS THE PILOT'S INABILITY TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Airframe/component/system failure/malfunction, takeoff - initial climb
  - flt control syst,rudder control attach points - failure,total
- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - precautionary landing - performed, pilot in command
  - directional control - not possible, pilot in command
  - landing gear,main gear strut - failure,total
  - landing gear,main gear strut - overload
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll

## Analysis

FOLLOWING A DAYLIGHT TAKEOFF, THE PILOT LOST RUDDER CONTROL DUE TO THE FAILURE OF A WORN RUDDER ADJUSTMENT BAR. THE PILOT MANEUVERED THE AIRPLANE BACK TO THE RUNWAY AND ATTEMPTED AN EMERGENCY LANDING. DURING THE LANDING ROLL, CONTROL WAS LOST AND THE AIRPLANE VEERED RIGHT OFF THE RUNWAY. AFTER THE AIRPLANE LEFT THE RUNWAY, THE RIGHT MAIN GEAR SHEARED.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
