## Probable cause

THE FAILURE OF THE ENGINE PISTON AND CONNECTING ROD. A FACTOR WAS THE WET LANDING AREA.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, cruise - normal
  - engine assembly,piston - burned (cause)
  - engine assembly,connecting rod - failure,total (cause)
  - reason for occurrence undetermined
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - airport facilities,runway/landing area condition - wet (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE SINGLE ENGINE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED A TOTAL LOSS OF POWER (MECHANICAL FAILURE) WHILE IN CRUISE FLIGHT. THE PILOT EXECUTED A FORCED LANDING TO A NEARBY AIRPORT. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED GEAR UP ON MUDDY TERRAIN APPROXIMATELY 200 YARDS SHORT OF THE RUNWAY. EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE REVEALED THAT A HOLE WAS BURNED IN A PISTON HEAD FROM DETONATION. A CONNECTING ROD SEPARATED AND PENETRATED THE ENGINE CASE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Incident 19910517016379I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910517016379I), May 17, 1991: Cessna T210L, Marked Tree, AR, Minor damage. Experienced loss of engine power. Made a forced landing. Engine incurred internal failure.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
