## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S DECISION TO ABORT THE TAKE OFF WITH INSUFFICIENT DISTANCE REMAINING. FACTORS WERE THE FLUCTUATING ENGINE AND THE TREES IN HIS PATH.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, takeoff
  - powerplant - fluctuating (contributing factor)
  - reason for occurrence undetermined
  - aborted takeoff - initiated, pilot in command (cause)
  - distance - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - object - tree(s)
  - wing - bent
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

DURING A DAYLIGHT DEPARTURE FROM A PASTURE THE PILOT REPORTED MOMENTARY FLUCTUATION OF ENGINE POWER. THE PRIVATE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO ABORT THE TAKEOFF WITH INSUFFICIENT GROUND RUN AVAILABLE. AS THE PILOT APPROACHED THE END OF THE PASTURE HE ATTEMPTED TO 'HOP' THE AIRPLANE OVER A FENCE WITH ELEVATOR INPUT. THE WING STRUCK A TREE, AND THE AIRPLANE WENT OUT OF CONTROL.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
