## Probable cause

THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR'S INADEQUATE SUPERVISION OF THE STUDENT. FACTORS WERE THE DUAL STUDENT'S MISJUDGEMENT OF ALTITUDE AND PREMATURE FLARE OF THE AIRPLANE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - altitude - misjudged, dual student (contributing factor)
  - flare - premature, dual student (contributing factor)
  - supervision - inadequate, pilot in command(cfi) (cause)
  - landing gear - collapsed
  - landing gear - overload
- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing

## Analysis

DURING A FOURTH PRACTICE APPROACH, THE STUDENT PILOT FAILED TO ALIGN THE AIRPLANE WITH THE CENTER LINE AND FLARED TOO HIGH. THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT ATTEMPTED TO TAKE CONTROL; HOWEVER, HE WAITED TOO LATE TO DO SO. THE AIRPLANE IMPACTED HARD AND WENT OUT OF CONTROL RUNNING OFF THE RUNWAY INTO A CULTIVATED FIELD. THE MAIN AND NOSE LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED IN THE SOFT EARTH.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
