## Probable cause

THE IMPROPER FLARE TECHNIQUE UTILITZED BY THE PILOT UNDER INSTRUCTION. A FACTOR WAS THE FAILURE OF THE CHECK PILOT TO INTERVENE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - landing gear,nose gear - collapsed
  - flare - improper, pilot in command (cause)
  - supervision - inadequate, check pilot (contributing factor)
- Fire, landing - roll

## Analysis

THE PILOT UNDER INSTRUCTION WAS REQUESTED BY THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT TO EXECUTE A SHORT FIELD LANDING. DURING THE LANDING A HARD TOUCHDOWN WAS MADE ON THE NOSE GEAR, COLLAPSING THE STRUT. THE AIRPLANE CAME TO REST ON THE RUNWAY AND WAS DESTROYED BY A POSTCRASH FIRE.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
