## Probable cause

THE LOSS OF ENGINE POWER DUE TO THE SEPARATION OF THE NUMBER ONE ENGINE CYLINDER. A FACTOR WAS THE UNSUITABLE TERRAIN.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, cruise - normal
  - engine assembly,cylinder - separation (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with object, descent - emergency
  - object - tree(s)
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)
- Loss of control - in flight, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

DURING A FORCED LANDING DUE TO LOSS OF ENGINE POWER THE AIRPLANE STRUCK A TREE WITH THE RIGHT WING. FOLLOWING THE TREE STRIKE THE AIRPLANE YAWED AND SLOWED DOWN. INITIAL GROUND CONTACT WAS WITH THE RIGHT WING, THIS CAUSED THE AIRPLANE TO ROTATE CLOCKWISE, RESULTING IN THE LANDING GEAR COLLAPSING. AN INSPECTION OF THE AIRPLANE REVEALED THAT THE NUMBER 1 CYLINDER HAD FAILED AND SEPARATED FROM THE ENGINE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920708024309A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920708024309A), Jul 8, 1992: Ayres S2RR1340REST, Grady, AR, Substantial damage. Lost power returning to base. Wing caught a tree on forced landing. NR1 cylinder had cracked and separated.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
