## Probable cause

INADVERTENT STALL. A FACTOR WAS THAT THE AIRCRAFT WEIGHT AND BALANCE LIMITATIONS WERE EXCEEDED.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Abrupt maneuver, maneuvering - turn to reverse direction
- Loss of control - in flight, maneuvering - turn to reverse direction

## Analysis

A COMMERCIAL AGRICULTURAL PILOT TOOK OFF WITH AN AIRPLANE THAT EXCEEDED THE MAXIMUM CERTIFICATED GROSS WEIGHT BY 464 POUNDS. AFTER COMPLETING AN AERIAL APPLICATION PASS, HE WAS OBSERVED EXECUTING AN ABRUPT PULL UP PRIOR TO TURNING TO REVERSE DIRECTION. THE PITCH OF THE AIRCRAFT WAS ESTIMATED AT 65 DEGREES ABOVE THE HORIZON. THE EXCESSIVE ANGLE OF ATTACK RESULTED IN AN INADVERTENT STALL. THE AIRCRAFT ROLLED AS THE NOSE PITCHED STRAIGHT DOWN TO IMPACT IN A NEAR VERTICAL ATTITUDE. A FIRE ENGULFED THE AIRPLANE AFTER IMPACT. THE AIRPLANE WAS 264 POUNDS OVER THE MAXIMUM GROSS WEIGHT AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19911005044909A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19911005044909A), Oct 5, 1991: Ayres S2RT15RESTD, Cordell, OK, Destroyed, 1 fatal. Crashed in steep nose down, wing low atitude and burned. Was approximately 464 lbs over gross at departure.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
