## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN TERRAIN CLEARANCE. A FACTOR WAS THE DARK NIGHT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight collision with object, descent - normal
  - light condition - dark night (contributing factor)
  - altitude - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - object - tree(s)
  - clearance - not maintained, pilot in command
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

DURING A DARK NIGHT APPROACH, THE PRIVATE PILOT FAILED TO MAINTAIN SUFFICIENT ALTITUDE TO MAINTAIN TERRAIN CLEARANCE. THE AIRPLANE STRUCK SEVERAL TREES AND SEVERED THE RIGHT WING SPAR AND WING FAIRING. FOLLOWING THE LOSS OF THE AIRFOIL ELEMENTS, THE AIRPLANE DESCENDED UNCONTROLLED TO GROUND IMPACT. THE ELEVATION OF THE IMPACT POINT WAS 250 FEET ABOVE THE AIRPORT ELEVATION, APPROXIMATELY 4 MILES FROM THE RUNWAY, AND ON THE EXTENDED CENTERLINE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920131001519A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920131001519A), Jan 31, 1992: Cessna 182, Bartlesville, OK, Destroyed, 2 fatal. Struck trees 45 feet AGL on dark night visual straight in approach to runway.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
