## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL WHICH RESULTED IN AN INADVERTENT STALL. THE GUSTY WIND WAS A FACTOR.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
  - aircraft control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - stall - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
  - weather condition - gusts (contributing factor)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

A PRIVATE PILOT WAS OBSERVED BY WITNESSES MAKING AN STRAIGHT IN VISUAL APPROACH. AFTER THE AIRPLANE CROSSED THE LANDING THRESHOLD IN THE LANDING CONFIGURATION, RIGHT CLIMBING TURN WAS INITIATED AS ENGINE POWER WAS APPLIED. PRIOR TO REVERSING DIRECTION, STILL IN THE LANDING CONFIGURATION, THE NOSE WAS OBSERVED DROPPING TOWARDS THE GROUND AND THE AIRPLANE IMPACTED THE GROUND IN A NOSE DOWN, RIGHT WING LOW ATTITUDE. THE INVESTIGATION FAILED TO FIND ANY ANOMALIES WITH THE AIRFRAME AND COMPONENTS. THE AUTOPSY FAILED TO SHOW ANY PREEXISTING DISEASE THAT COULD HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE LOSS OF CONTROL. WEATHER AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT WAS CLEAR WITH HEADWINDS OF 19 KNOTS GUSTING TO 25 KNOTS.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920617020839A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920617020839A), Jun 17, 1992: Piper PA28R180, Oklahoma City, OK, Destroyed, 1 fatal. On short final was observed to go full power in right climbing turn and stall. No mechanical. Cause undetermined.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
