## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S IMPROPER FLARE AND IMPROPER RECOVERY FROM THE RESULTANT BOUNCED LANDING. A FACTOR WAS THE PILOT'S LACK OF FAMILIARITY WITH THE AIRPLANE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - flare - improper, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of familiarity with aircraft, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - recovery from bounced landing - improper, pilot in command (cause)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

DURING A DAYTIME APPROACH, THE PILOT LOST CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE DURING THE LANDING ROLL. THE AIRPLANE PORPOISED AND VEERED LEFT OFF THE RUNWAY AND NOSED OVER INTO THE INVERTED POSITION. THE PILOT REPORTED ENGINE ROUGHNESS AND AIRPLANE INSTABILITY; HOWEVER, NO DISCREPANCIES WITH AIRPLANE CONTROLS NOR THE ENGINE WERE FOUND AT THE TIME OF THE INVESTIGATION. THE PILOT FURTHER REPORTED THAT THERE WAS NO INTENT TO FLY AND THAT HE GOT AIRBORNE INADVERTENTLY DURING AN INTENDED HIGH SPEED TAXI. THE COWL FLAP WAS LEFT TAPED SHUT. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED ON THE THIRD ATTEMPTED LANDING.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19911020048709A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19911020048709A), Oct 20, 1991: Amtrqk QUICKIE2, Houston, TX, Substantial damage. Became airborne on taxi test. Engine got hot due cowl flaps taped shut. Porpoised landing. Left runway. Nosed over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
