## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S ATTEMPTED VFR FLIGHT INTO IMC CONDITIONS. FACTORS WERE, THE PILOT'S LACK OF INSTRUMENT QUALIFICATION, HIS FAILURE TO OBTAIN A WEATHER BRIEFING PRIOR TO THE FLIGHT, AND DARK NIGHT CONDITIONS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight encounter with weather, cruise
  - weather condition - low ceiling
  - weather forecast - not obtained, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - vfr flight into imc - attempted, pilot in command (cause)
  - inadequate training, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- Loss of control - in flight, cruise - normal
  - light condition - dark night (contributing factor)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

A NON-INSTRUMENT RATED PRIVATE PILOT DEPARTED ON A 362 MILE NIGHT CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHT WITHOUT OBTAINING A WEATHER BRIEFING. THE PILOT ATTEMPTED VFR FLIGHT INTO IMC WEATHER, LOST CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE AND IMPACTED THE GROUND APPROXIMATELY 35 MILES BEYOND HIS INTENDED DESTINATION.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19911129053759A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19911129053759A), Nov 29, 1991: Cessna 182F, Morse, TX, Substantial damage. Flew into forecast IMC a night lost control and crashed inverted.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
