## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO COMPENSATE FOR A CROSSWIND CONDITION. FACTORS WERE THE PILOT'S LACK OF TOTAL EXPERIENCE AND THE PREVAILING CROSSWIND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - flare/touchdown
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - compensation for wind conditions - improper, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of total experience, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

A 17 HOUR STUDENT PILOT LOST CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT AFTER TOUCHDOWN ON THE THIRD LANDING OF A SUPERVISED SOLO FLIGHT. THE AIRPLANE BOUNCED ON TOUCHDOWN AND STARTED TO DRIFT TOWARDS THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT FAILED TO PROPERLY COMPENSATE FOR THE EXISTING RIGHT CROSSWIND, THE AIRCRAFT EXITED THE RUNWAY AND THE NOSE WHEEL SANK INTO THE SOFT MUD CAUSING THE AIRPLANE TO NOSE OVER ON IT'S BACK.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19911125058429A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19911125058429A), Nov 25, 1991: Cessna 172P, Okmulgee, OK, Substantial damage. Student lost control landing in light crosswind. Left the runway and nosed over in soft mud.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
