## Probable cause

THE PILOTS FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE. A FACTOR WAS IMPROPER AIRSPEED PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN WHICH RESULTED IN A HARD LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - airspeed - improper, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water collision with object, other
  - object - fence
  - object - tree(s)

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS ATTEMPTING A TOUCH AND GO LANDING AT AN UNFAMILIAR AIRPORT WHEN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE TAILWHEEL AIRPLANE WAS LOST FOLLOWING A HARD LANDING ON THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR. THE AIRPLANE SWERVED TO THE RIGHT OFF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT APPLIED FULL POWER DURING AN ATTEMPT TO RECOVER AND STRUCK ROCKS WITH THE AIRPLANE'S RIGHT MAIN GEAR. IT THEN CONTINUED TO THE RIGHT AND IMPACTED A FENCE AND TREES. NO MECHANICAL FAILURE WAS FOUND OR REPORTED. THE PILOT REPORTED TO THE FAA COORDINATOR THAT HE WAS SLOW DURING FINAL APPROACH.

## Other investigations on N45722 (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
