## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO FULLY EXTEND THE LANDING GEAR BY THE ALTERNATE GEAR EXTENTION SYSTEM. FACTORS WERE THE DARK NIGHT, LOW CEILING, FOG, DRIZZLE AND FAILURE OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Airframe/component/system failure/malfunction, approach - faf/outer marker to threshold (ifr)
  - electrical system,alternator - shorted (contributing factor)
  - light condition - dark night (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - fog (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - drizzle/mist (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - low ceiling (contributing factor)
- Main gear collapsed, landing - flare/touchdown
  - emergency procedure - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - gear down and locked - not attained, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

THE AIRPLANE'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAILED DURING THE INSTRUMENT APPROACH TO THE AIRPORT. THE WEATHER WAS INSTRUMENT METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS WITH LOW CEILINGS, DRIZZLE, AND FOG. THE PILOT LOWERED THE LANDING GEAR WHICH DID NOT FULLY EXTEND. THE GEAR COLLAPSED UPON TOUCHDOWN ON THE RUNWAY. THE FAA REPORTED FINDING A ELECTRICALLY SHORTED ALTERNATOR.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920203003269A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920203003269A), Feb 3, 1992: Cessna 172RG, Waco, TX, Substantial damage. Lost electronics on approach and all electric power. Gear was down but not locked. Collapsed. Alternator shorted.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
