## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S IMPROPER USE OF CARBURETOR HEAT DURING THE APPROACH IN CARBURETOR ICING CONDITIONS AND HIS IMPROPER FLARE DURING THE EMERGENCY LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
  - weather condition - carburetor icing conditions
  - carburetor heat - improper use of, pilot in command (cause)
  - fuel system,carburetor - ice
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - flare - improper, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED THAT THE ENGINE BEGAN 'SPUTTERING' WHILE HE WAS ON FINAL APPROACH AND THEN QUIT ABOUT 10 SECONDS LATER. REALIZING THAT HE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE THE ROAD THAT HE HAD CHOSEN FOR THE FORCED LANDING, THE PILOT ELECTED TO LAND IN AN OPEN FIELD. THE AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN HARD IN A THREE POINT ATTITUDE, BOUNCED ONCE, AND THEN IMPACTED THE GROUND IN A NOSE DOWN ATTITUDE. INSPECTION OF THE ENGINE REVEALED NO EVIDENCE OF MECHANICAL FAILURE OR MALFUNCTION. THE ICING PROBABILITY CHARTS INDICATED THAT THE THREAT OF SERIOUS CARBURETOR ICING WAS PRESENT FOR THE TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY CONDITIONS THAT EXISTED AT THE TIME.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920322006989A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920322006989A), Mar 22, 1992: Cessna 150F, Baytown, TX, Substantial damage. Engine quit on final. Stall mushed to hard landing in a field. Engine normal. Conditions favorable for carb icing.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
