## Probable cause

THE ENGINE FAILURE FOR UNDETERMINED REASONS. A FACTOR WAS THE LACK OF SUITABLE TERRAIN ONTO WHICH THE ENSUING FORCED LANDING COULD BE EXECUTED.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, takeoff - initial climb
  - reason for occurrence undetermined (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - flare/touchdown
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)
- Nose over, landing - flare/touchdown
  - terrain condition - soft

## Analysis

THE PILOT EXPERIENCED A GRADUAL POWER LOSS SHORTLY AFTER MAKING HIS FIRST POWER REDUCTION AFTER TAKEOFF. HIS EFFORTS TO ALLEVIATE THE SITUATION WERE UNSUCCESSFUL AND SHORTLY THEREAFTER, THE ENGINE EMITTED BLACK SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST AND LOST COMPLETE POWER. THE AIRPLANE HAD NOT CLIMBED ABOVE 100 FEET AGL AND THE ONLY TERRAIN AVAILABLE FOR THE FORCED LANDING WAS RICE FIELDS WHICH WERE WET AND SOFT AND COVERED IN SIX INCHES OF WATER. THE AIRPLANE NOSED OVER ON TOUCHDOWN. THE OPERATOR REPORTED THAT THE NEWLY OVERHAULED ENGINE HAD BEEN INSTALLED THE DAY PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920530017209A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920530017209A), May 30, 1992: Scwzer G164B, Mamou, LA, Substantial damage. Lost power on climbout after engine belched black smoke. Nosed over landing in water in muddy rice field.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
