## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN ADEQUATE CLIMB SPEED WHICH RESULTED IN A STALL & SUBSEQUENT LOSS OF AIRCRAFT CONTROL. FACTORS WERE THE CROSSWIND AND GUSTING WIND CONDITIONS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, takeoff - initial climb
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - gusts (contributing factor)
  - stall - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled
  - altitude - inadequate
  - remedial action - not possible, pilot in command

## Analysis

DURING THE INITIAL CLIMB AN INADVERTENT STALL OCCURRED AT APPROXIMATELY 75 FEET AGL. THE AIRPLANE DESCENDED UNCONTROLLED AND IMPACTED THE TERRAIN. THE PILOT REPORTED THE WINDS WERE GUSTING OFF THE LAKE. THE TAKEOFF WAS PERFORMED WITH A CROSSWIND CONDITION.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920605018559A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920605018559A), Jun 5, 1992: Piper J3C65, Lake Dallas, TX, Substantial damage. Took off in gusty crosswind and turbulence. Gust raised wing. Stalled and impacted terrain.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
