## Probable cause

FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO SELECT THE PROPER FUEL TANK AND RESULTANT FUEL STARVATION POWER LOSS. A FACTOR WAS THE UNSUITABLE TERRAIN.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, cruise - normal
  - fluid,fuel - starvation (cause)
  - fuel tank selector position - improper, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing - flare/touchdown
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)

## Analysis

DURING A CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHT, WITH A FULL FUEL CAPACITY, THE PILOT FAILED TO SELECT THE CORRECT TANK AND THE ENGINE LOST POWER DUE TO FUEL STARVATION. UNSUITABLE TERRAIN WAS ENCOUNTERED DURING THE FORCED LANDING.
