## Probable cause

The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during takeoff.

## Findings

NTSB's coded findings; those marked are part of the probable cause.

## Analysis

The pilot reported that, during the takeoff roll on a narrow runway about 70 to 80 knots, he noticed that the engines were not at full power. He advanced the throttles "a little further," but when he did so, the left main landing gear dropped off the left side of the runway into soft mud. Subsequently, the airplane veered off the runway to the left, the nose gear collapsed, and the airplane stopped in the mud. The fuselage and engine firewalls sustained substantial damage. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

## Factual narrative

The pilot reported that during the takeoff roll on a narrow runway about 70 to 80 knots, he noticed that the engines were not at full power. The pilot further reported that he advanced the throttles "a little further," but when he did so, the left main landing gear dropped off the left side of the runway into soft mud. Subsequently, the airplane veered off the runway to the left, the nose gear collapsed, and the airplane stopped in the mud. The fuselage and engine firewalls sustained substantial damage. The pilot did not report any preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 20170113000359A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/20170113000359A), Jan 13, 2017: Beech B200, Five Points, CA, Substantial damage. On take-off roll the aircraft veered to left of the runway into the mud. Aircraft then proceeded 1500 feet just left of the runway, then came to rest 240 feet…

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
