## Probable cause

FAILURE OF THE STUDENT PILOT TO ASCERTAIN THE WIND DIRECTION RESULTING IN A DOWNWIND LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Overrun, landing - roll
  - wind information - not obtained, pilot in command (cause)
  - wrong runway - selected, pilot in command (cause)
  - weather condition - tailwind (contributing factor)
  - anxiety/apprehension, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - ditch

## Analysis

THE STUDENT WAS EN ROUTE ON A SOLO CROSS COUNTRY INSTRUCTIONAL FLIGHT WHEN HE BECAME DISORIENTED. HE BECAME CONCERNED ABOUT BOTH HIS FUEL STATE AND THE PROSPECT OF NIGHTFALL WHEN HE SAW THE BANNING AIRPORT. THE PILOT DID NOT MAKE A NORMAL PATTERN ENTRY OR CHECK THE WIND DIRECTION AND SPEED. THE PILOT LANDED DOWNWIND ON RUNWAY 8 WITH A TAIL WIND ESTIMATED BY WITNESSES TO BE 10 KNOTS. THE STUDENT COULD NOT STOP THE AIRCRAFT ON THE RUNWAY AND IT OVERRAN THE DEPARTURE END AND COLLIDED WITH A LARGE DITCH.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900410011349A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900410011349A), Apr 10, 1990: Cessna 152, Banning, CA, Destroyed. Low on fuel at dusk on student crosscountry. Saw an airport and landed downwind. Ran off end runway into a ditch.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
