## Probable cause

THE PARTIAL FAILURE OF THE ENGINE'S RIGHT MAGNETO, WHICH RESULTED IN A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(partial) - mech failure/malf, descent
  - ignition system,magneto - failure,partial (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - emergency
  - terrain condition - soft

## Analysis

THE STUDENT WAS ASSIGNED TO PRACTICE STEEP APPROACH LANDINGS, HOVERING AND QUICK STOPS. AFTER FLYING FOR ABOUT 45 MINUTES, AND WHILE PRACTICING QUICK STOPS, THE HELICOPTER'S ENGINE BEGAN SPUTTERING, COUGHING AND THEN QUIT. THE PILOT MADE AN AUTOROTATIVE DESCENT AND ROLLED OVER FOLLOWING TOUCHDOWN ON SOFT TERRAIN. DURING THE POST-CRASH EXAM OF THE AIRCRAFT THE ENGINE RPM DROP OFF ASSOCIATED WITH OPERATION OF THE LEFT AND RIGHT MAGNETOS WAS NOTED AT 150 AND 400 RPM, RESPECTIVELY.

## Other investigations on N756H (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
