## Probable cause

THE PILOT FAILED TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - flight controls - improper use of, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - brakes(normal) - excessive, pilot in command (cause)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

THE CERTIFICATED PRIVATE PILOT WAS LANDING HIS TAIL-WHEELED AIRPLANE AFTER TWO PREVIOUS LANDINGS AND REPORTED THAT HE ENCOUNTERED WINDS DURING THE LANDING ROLL OF THE THIRD LANDING. THE AIRPLANE STARTED TO TURN TO THE RIGHT. THE PILOT APPLIED HARD LEFT BRAKE, CAUSING THE AIRPLANE TO NOSE DOWN AND THE PROPELLER STRUCK THE RUNWAY. THE WINDS WHERE REPORTED BY THE PILOT AS LIGHT AND VARIABLE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900503013309A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900503013309A), May 3, 1990: Cessna 140, Paso Robles, CA, Substantial damage. Used too much brake to correct a swerve on landing and nosed over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
