## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S IMPROPER DECISION TO RELEASE FROM THE TOW AIRPLANE AT AN INSUFFICIENT ALTITUDE ON THE LEE SIDE OF THE MOUNTAINS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight collision with object, maneuvering
  - object - tree(s)
  - weather condition - tailwind (contributing factor)
  - terrain condition - mountainous/hilly
  - weather evaluation - poor, pilot in command (cause)
  - altitude - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

THE STUDENT GLIDER PILOT RELEASED FROM THE TOW AIRPLANE WITHOUT COMMUNICATING WITH THE TOW PILOT. THE GLIDER PROCEEDED IN A NORTHEAST DIRECTION TOWARD THE LEE SIDE OF THE MOUNTAINS. THE SURFACE WIND WAS FROM THE SOUTHWEST. THE GLIDER WAS OBSERVED AT A LOW ALTITUDE DISAPPEARING OVER A RIDGE. THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK A 50 FT TREE ABOUT 10 FEET FROM THE TOP THEN COLLIDED WITH THE GROUND.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
