## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT DURING THE ATTEMPTED GO AROUND. A FACTOR IN THE ACCIDENT WAS THE FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO FOLLOW THE GO AROUND PROCEDURES SPECIFIED IN THE AIRCRAFT FLIGHT MANUAL.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, landing - aborted
  - flare - delayed, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - recovery from bounced landing - improper, pilot in command
  - raising of flaps - premature, pilot in command (cause)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with object, go-around (vfr)
  - object - building(nonresidential)

## Analysis

THE PILOT SAID THAT HE LANDED HARD ON RUNWAY 16L AND THE AIRCRAFT BOUNCED BACK INTO THE AIR. THE PILOT RETRACTED THE FLAPS AND INITIATED A GO AROUND. DURING THE GO AROUND THE PILOT SAID HE LOST CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT AND IT DRIFTED TO THE LEFT OF THE RUNWAY AND COLLIDED WITH A HANGAR. THE WINDS AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT WERE REPORTED AS CALM.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900628022839A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900628022839A), Jun 28, 1990: Cessna 172N, Van Nuys, CA, Substantial damage. Bounced into air on landing. Began go around and drifted left striking a hangar.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
