## Probable cause

THE STUDENT PILOT NOT FLARING FOR THE TOUCHDOWN.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Nose gear collapsed, landing - flare/touchdown
  - flare - not performed, pilot in command (cause)
  - porpoise/pilot-induced oscillation - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of total experience, pilot in command (contributing factor)

## Analysis

DURING THE STUDENT PILOT'S THIRD SOLO LANDING HE FAILED TO FLARE FOR TOUCHDOWN. THE AIRCRAFT PORPOISED AND IMPACTED THE RUNWAY ON THE NOSE LANDING GEAR. THE IMPACT COLLAPSED THE NOSE GEAR.

- [Accident 19900701023129A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900701023129A), Jul 1, 1990: Cessna 152, Upland, CA, Substantial damage. Student bounced and porpoised his aircraft on third solo landing collapsing the nose gear.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
