## Probable cause

THE ACCUMULATION OF CARBURETOR ICE RESULTING FROM THE FAILURE OF THE STUDENT PILOT TO APPLY CARBURETOR HEAT DURING THE POWER OFF GLIDING DESCENT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(partial) - nonmechanical, go-around (vfr)
  - weather condition - carburetor icing conditions (contributing factor)
  - carburetor heat - not selected, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - emergency
  - object - tree(s) (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE STUDENT PILOT WAS PRACTICING A FORCED LANDING TO AN AIRPORT. DURING HIS POWER OFF DESCENT HE DID NOT APPLY CARBURETOR HEAT. WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO INCREASE POWER FOR THE GO-AROUND, THE ENGINE FALTERED AND THE AIRCRAFT COLLIDED WITH ROCKS AND TREES BEFORE NOSING OVER ON ITS BACK.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900807031049A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900807031049A), Aug 7, 1990: Cessna TR182, Jackson, CA, Substantial damage. Leaned mixture for 6000 ft MSL. Failed to enrigh for landing at 1600 ftms. Tried go around. Engine quit. Hit rocks.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
