## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT. THE EXISTING WIND CONDITIONS AND THE DITCH THAT WAS LOCATED NEAR THE RUNWAY WERE FACTORS IN THE ACCIDENT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - weather condition - tailwind (contributing factor)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - ditch (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT ELECTED TO LAND ON A 3 1/2 PERCENT (ABOUT 2 DEGREES) UP SLOPING RUNWAY WITH A WIND GUSTING TO 16 KNOTS IN THE DIRECTION OF LANDING. AFTER THE AIRCRAFT SLOWED DURING THE LANDING, IT TURNED LEFT INTO AN OPEN DITCH.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900818034009A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900818034009A), Aug 18, 1990: Piper STCPA22, Weaverville, CA, Substantial damage. Landed downwind lost control and veered off runway. Aircraft modified to a tail wheel type.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
