## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN AIRSPEED ON FINAL APPROACH, RESULTING IN A STALL AND A PORPOISE ON LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, landing - flare/touchdown
  - airspeed(vref) - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - stall/mush - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - porpoise/pilot-induced oscillation - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
- Nose gear collapsed, landing - roll

## Analysis

THE PILOT SAID THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN PORPOISING WHEN SHE FLARED FOR LANDING. THE AIRCRAFT HIT THE NOSE WHEEL HARD ON THE RUNWAY SEVERAL TIMES. THE PILOT SAID SHE WAS ABLE TO AFFECT A GO AROUND AND LANDED ON THE SECOND APPROACH. AFTER THE LANDING, THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900828037159A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900828037159A), Aug 28, 1990: Cessna 182Q, Fresno, CA, Substantial damage. Bounced porpoised landing went around and nose gear collapsed on landing.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
