## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S INADEQUATE COMPENSATION FOR THE WIND CONDITION. A FACTOR RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WAS THE DOWNDRAFT WEATHER CONDITION.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight encounter with weather, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
  - weather condition - downdraft (contributing factor)
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - altitude - not attained, pilot in command
- In flight collision with object, go-around (vfr)
  - object - fence
  - go-around - initiated, pilot in command
- In flight collision with terrain/water, go-around (vfr)
  - terrain condition - berm

## Analysis

APPROACHING THE DESTINATION AIRSTRIP, WHICH WAS LOCATED IN MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN, THE PILOT ENCOUNTERED TURBULENCE AND 500 TO 1500 FEET PER MINUTE DOWNDRAFTS. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE APPLIED FULL ENGINE POWER AND ATTEMPTED TO ABORT THE LANDING. THE AIRPLANE OVERFLEW THE DEPARTURE END OF THE RUNWAY, AND COLLIDED WITH A FENCE AND A DIRT BERM.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910506015499A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910506015499A), May 6, 1991: Cessna STC140, Ojai, CA, Substantial damage. Encountered severe turbulance and severe downdraft trying to land on Private strip. Tried go around but hit runway.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
