## Probable cause

THE PILOTS NEGLECT TO CALCULATE THE AIRCRAFTS FUEL CONSUMPTION AND HIS FAILURE TO SERVICE THE AIRCRAFT WITH FUEL PRIOR TO THE LAST TAKEOFF. THE WIRE ACROSS THE AIRCRAFTS FLIGHT PATH DURING THE FORCED LANDING WAS A FACTOR IN THE ACCIDENT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(partial) - nonmechanical, climb - to cruise
  - fluid - exhaustion (contributing factor)
  - fuel consumption calculations - not performed, pilot in command (cause)
  - aircraft service - not performed, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with object, descent - emergency
  - object - wire,transmission (contributing factor)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing - flare/touchdown

## Analysis

AFTER ARRIVING AT HIS DESTINATION AIRPORT THE PILOT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WERE NO REFUELING PERSONNEL AVAILABLE TO SERVICE HIS AIRCRAFT. HE TOOK OFF TO FLY TO A NEARBY AIRPORT TO REFUEL. DURING THE CLIMB THE AIRCRAFTS ENGINE FAILED FROM FUEL STARVATION. THE PILOT ENTERED A FORCED LANDING DESCENT, IMPACTING WIRES BEFORE COLLIDING WITH THE TERRAIN.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910516016269A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910516016269A), May 16, 1991: Cessna 150L, Groveland, CA, Substantial damage. Unable to obtain fuel. Departed for another airport 15 miles away. Ran out of fuel on climbout. Hit a power line.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
