## Probable cause

THE TOTAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER DUE TO UNDETERMINED REASON(S). A FACTOR IN THIS ACCIDENT WAS THE SOFT SOIL THE AIRPLANE ENCOUNTERED DURING LANDING ROLL WHICH CAUSED THE AIRPLANE TO NOSE OVER.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, takeoff - initial climb
  - reason for occurrence undetermined
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose over, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - soft (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE CERTIFIED FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR AND HIS STUDENT, TAKING HIS FIRST FLYING LESSON, WERE PERFORMING A TURN FROM CROSSWIND TO DOWNWIND IN A TRAFFIC PATTERN WHEN THEIR AIRPLANE'S ENGINE HAD A TOTAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER. THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR EXECUTED A POWER OFF FORCED LANDING TO A NEARBY FIELD. DURING THE LANDING ROLL, THE NOSE WHEEL ENTERED SOFT SOIL AND THE AIRPLANE NOSED OVER. AFTER THE ACCIDENT THE ENGINE WAS SUCCESSFULLY STARTED AND OPERATED. NO DEFICIENCIES WERE DISCOVERED DURING THE ENGINE RUN THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920214003019A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920214003019A), Feb 14, 1992: Cessna 152, Showlow, AZ, Destroyed. Reported engine quit. Nosed over in mud on forced landing. Engine was run after accident. Cause power loss unknown.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
