## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF HIS AIRPLANE FOR UNDETERMINED REASONS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, cruise
  - reason for occurrence undetermined (cause)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled
  - terrain condition - open field

## Analysis

A FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR-WITNESS OBSERVED THE ACCIDENT PILOT CRUISING HIS EXPERIMENTAL AIRPLANE AT ABOUT 600 FEET ABOVE GROUND LEVEL. ACCORDING TO THE WITNESS, THE AIRPLANE GRADUALLY NOSED OVER AND DESCENDED 'STRAIGHT TOWARD THE GROUND.' THERE WAS NO REPORT OF ANY OTHER AIR TRAFFIC IN THE VICINITY. THE SKY WAS CLEAR AND THE WIND WAS LIGHT AND VARIABLE. NO EVIDENCE WAS FOUND OF ANY PRE-IMPACT MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION, AND THE ENGINE APPEARED CAPABLE OF OPERATION. THE TERRAIN IN THE VICINITY OF THE ACCIDENT SITE CONSISTED OF AN OPEN FIELD. THE REASON THE PILOT FAILED TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF HIS AIRPLANE WAS NOT ESTABLISHED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920508013879A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920508013879A), May 8, 1992: Amtr QUICKSILVER, Perris, CA, Destroyed, 1 fatal. Observed to nose over at 600 ft AGL and dive into ground. No mechanical problems.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
