## Probable cause

THE INTERNAL FAILURE OF THE AIRPLANE'S THROTTLE CONTROL CABLE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, approach - vfr pattern - final approach

  - throttle/power lever,cable - failure,total (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with object, descent - emergency
  - object - wire,transmission
  - object - tree(s)

## Analysis

APPROACHING THE DESTINATION AIRPORT, THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO INCREASE ENGINE POWER. THE ENGINE DID NOT RESPOND, AND THE PILOT MADE A FORCED LANDING SHORT OF THE RUNWAY. AN EXAMINATION OF THE AIRPLANE REVEALED THE THROTTLE CONTROL ASSEMBLY HAD FAILED INTERNALLY BETWEEN THE FIREWALL AND THE CONTROL KNOB. ACCORDING TO THE FAA, THE WORN OUT CONDITION OF THE CONTROL ASSEMBLY WAS NOT DETECTABLE UPON A ROUTINE VISUAL EXAMINATION OF THE AIRPLANE BY MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL. THE CONTROL ASSEMBLY WAS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT IN THE AIRPLANE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920602018009A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920602018009A), Jun 2, 1992: Cessna 182C, Redding, CA, Substantial damage. Engine went to idle on landing approach. Struck wires and trees on forced landing. Original throttle cable broke.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
