## Probable cause

THE STUDENT PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL AND IMPROPER USE OF THE BRAKES.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - brakes(normal) - improper use of, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water collision with object, landing - roll
  - object - fence

## Analysis

THE SOLO STUDENT PILOT WAS PRACTICING TOUCH AND GO TAKEOFFS AND LANDINGS. ON THE THIRD LANDING THE STUDENT PILOT PLANNED TO EXECUTE A FULL STOP LANDING. TOWER PERSONNEL REPORTED THE AIRPLANE SKIPPED ON TOUCH DOWN AND THEN BEGAN TO ROLL-OUT. MOMENTS LATER THE STUDENT PILOT FAILED TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL AND APPLIED HARD, UNEVEN RIGHT BRAKING AND THE AIRPLANE EXITED THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY AND COLLIDED WITH A FENCE THAT PARALLELS THE RUNWAY. EXAMINATION OF THE BRAKES AND TIRES DISCLOSED NO EVIDENCE OF ANY PREEXISTING LOCKED BRAKE CONDITION. THE RUDDER TRIM WAS OFFSET TO THE RIGHT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920616020739A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920616020739A), Jun 16, 1992: Piper PA28161, El Monte, CA, Substantial damage. Veered sharply off runway on touch and go and struck a fence. No brake problems found. Right rudder trim selected.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
