## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S SELECTION OF UNSUITABLE TERRAIN FOR TAKEOFF. CONTRIBUTING TO THIS ACCIDENT WAS THE RAVINE THAT CROSSED THE RUNWAY.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, takeoff - roll/run
  - terrain condition - ravine (contributing factor)
  - terrain condition - dirt bank/rising embankment
  - unsuitable terrain or takeoff/landing/taxi area - selected, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS BEGINNING AN AGRICULTURAL AERIAL APPLICATION FLIGHT FROM A PRIVATELY OWNED DIRT AIRSTRIP. DURING THE TAKEOFF ROLL THE AIRPLANE STRUCK A WASHED OUT RAVINE THAT CROSSED THE RUNWAY, PITCHED UP, AND STALLED. THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO GAIN ANY FLYING SPEED AND THE AIRPLANE BOUNCED TWO MORE TIMES UNTIL ITS TAILWHEEL STRUCK A DIRT EMBANKMENT AT THE END ON THE RUNWAY.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
