## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S POOR PREFLIGHT INSPECTION. FACTORS RELATING TO THIS ACCIDENT WERE THE NOT PROPERLY SECURED OIL CAP AND THE OIL COVERED WINDSHIELD.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - lubricating system, oil filler cap - not secured (contributing factor)
  - aircraft preflight - poor, pilot in command (cause)
  - precautionary landing - performed, pilot in command
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command
  - window,flight compartment window/windshield - contamination (contributing factor)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - ditch

## Analysis

DURING THE PREFLIGHT INSPECTION THE CERTIFICATED PRIVATE PILOT FAILED TO ASSURE THAT THE OIL CAP WAS PROPERLY SECURED. SHORTLY AFTER DEPARTING ON A CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHT THE OIL SCREEN BECAME OIL SOAKED AND COMPLETELY OBSCURED. THE PILOT RETURNED TO THE AIRPORT. DURING THE LANDING THE AIRPLANE BOUNCED AND EXITED THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY AND COLLIDED WITH A DRAINAGE DITCH.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930215002389A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930215002389A), Feb 15, 1993: Cessna 182E, Corning, CA, Substantial damage. Oil on windshield on initial climb. Made circuit. Bounced landing. Left runway into a ditch. Oil cap came off.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
