## Probable cause

the pilot's inadequate compensation for the existing cross wind condition.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, takeoff - initial climb
  - weather condition - crosswind
  - weather condition - gusts
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - proper alignment - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with object, takeoff - initial climb
  - object - fence

## Analysis

The pilot said that there were no mechanical malfunctions of the aircraft. The pilot reported that the winds during the takeoff on runway 6 were from 340 degrees at 20 knots, with higher gusts to 25 knots. Just after liftoff, the aircraft began drifting to the right and the pilot said he could not correct the ground track before the aircraft collided with a chain link fence which borders the airport. The fence was located about 60 feet from the edge of the runway.

## Factual narrative

On January 13, 1994, at 1500 Pacific standard time, a Stinson 108-1, N8286K, sustained substantial damage during a collision with a fence on takeoff at the Flabob airport, Rubidoux, California. The aircraft was owned and operated by the pilot. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and included an 80 degree left cross wind at 20 knots. Neither the private pilot nor his one passenger were injured. No flight plan was filed for the personal operation, which was originating at the time of the mishap as a cross country flight to San Diego, California.

In his written statement, the pilot said that there were no mechanical malfunctions of the aircraft. The pilot reported that the winds during the takeoff on runway 6 were from 340 degrees at 20 knots, with higher gusts to 25 knots. Just after lift-off, the aircraft began drifting to the right and the pilot said he could not correct the ground track before the aircraft collided with a chain link fence which borders the airport. The fence was located about 60 feet from the edge of the runway.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19940113000359A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19940113000359A), Jan 13, 1994: Univar 1081, Riverside/Rubid, CA, Substantial damage. Tried to depart in severe crosswind. Drifted into a fence 60 feet from runway. Crosswind component exceeded.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
