## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO HAVE SOMEONE OPERATE THE AIRPLANE'S BRAKES AND ENGINE CONTROLS DURING HAND PROPPING THE ENGINE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, standing - starting engine(s)
  - starting procedure - not followed, pilot in command (cause)
  - brakes(normal) - not used, pilot in command (cause)
  - object - aircraft parked/standing
- On ground/water collision with object, taxi

## Analysis

THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO HAND PROP THE ENGINE WITHOUT A PERSON MANNING THE AIRPLANE CONTROLS. THE ENGINE STARTED AND THE AIRPLANE TAXIED UNMANNED INTO A PARKED AIRPLANE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19890530013399A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19890530013399A), May 30, 1989: Cessna 150L, Jacksonville, FL, Substantial damage. Low battery. Hand started engine. Aircraft unsecured taxied into a parked aircraft.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
