## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S INADEQUATE PREFLIGHT PLANNING AND ATTEMPTED FLIGHT WITH INSUFFICIENT FUEL ON BOARD TO COMPLETE THE FLIGHT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, maneuvering
  - fluid,fuel - exhaustion (cause)
  - refueling - not performed, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - ground

## Analysis

THE PLT STATED THAT THE FLT DEPARTED WITH ABOUT 7 GALS OF FUEL. AFTER COMPLETING THREE SPRAY PASSES AND WHILE PULLING UP TO RETURN TO LAND, THE ENG LOST POWER AT ABOUT 150 FT AGL. DURING THE FORCED LANDING IN THE FIELD, THE WINGS & LANDING GEAR WERE DAMAGED. AN EXAM OF THE AIRPLANE REVEALED THAT THE ENG HAD LOST POWER DUE TO FUEL EXHAUSTION.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900511015609A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900511015609A), May 11, 1990: Piper PA36300, Shelby, MS, Substantial damage. Took off with minimum fuel for short spray operation. Ran out of fuel returning to base. Landed in cotton.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
