## Probable cause

THE PILOTS DECISION TO DEPART FOR HIS DESTINATION AIRPORT IN THE PATH OF APPROACHING THUNDERSTORMS RESULTING IN THE ENCOUNTER WITH WIND GUSTS DURING LANDING WHICH EXCEEDED HIS LIMITATIONS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight collision with object, landing - aborted
  - weather condition - thunderstorm
  - weather condition - gusts
  - preflight planning/preparation - poor, pilot in command (cause)
  - preflight briefing service - not used, pilot in command (cause)
  - in-flight planning/decision - not understood, pilot in command (cause)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, landing

## Analysis

PLT DEPARTED FOR DESTINATION WITHOUT RECEIVING A WEATHER BRIEFING. AFTER TAKEOFF HE NOTICED THUNDERSTORMS IN AREA. HE CONTINUED TO HIS DESTINATION AND RECEIVED RUNWAY AND WIND INFORMATION FROM UNICOM. A GOAROUND WAS MADE FROM HIS FIRST APPROACH DUE TO GUSTY WINDS. WHILE FLARING TO LAND AFTER HIS SECOND APPROACH THE AIRPLANE DRIFTED TO THE LEFT DUE TO THE CROSSWIND. A GOAROUND WAS ATTEMPTED HOWEVER THE FLIGHT COLLIDED WITH A PARKED AIRPLANE BEFORE A CLIMB COULD BE ESTABLISHED. THE ELEVATOR WAS DAMAGED IN THE COLLISION AND A FORCED LANDING WAS MADE IN A FIELD 3 MILES FROM THE AIRPORT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900725028979A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900725028979A), Jul 25, 1990: Piper PA32300, Plymouth, FL, Substantial damage. On third try for crosswind landing drifted sideways. Began go around and hit parked aircraft. Landed minus a gear.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
