## Probable cause

FAILURE OF THE STUDENT PILOT TO FLARE FOR LANDING AND HIS LOSS OF CONTROL AFTER A BOUNCED LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - flare - not performed, pilot in command
  - recovery from bounced landing - not performed, pilot in command
  - porpoise/pilot-induced oscillation - not corrected, pilot in command
- Nose gear collapsed, landing - flare/touchdown
- Nose over, landing - flare/touchdown

## Analysis

AFTER DEPARTURE FOR THE STUDENT PLT'S FIRST UNSUPERVISED SOLO FLT, THE FLT ENTERED THE TRAFFIC PATTERN FOR TOUCH & GO LANDINGS. WHILE CORRECTING FOR THE CROSSWIND, THE STUDENT FORGOT TO FLARE THE ACFT. IT BEGAN TO PORPOISE WHICH COLLAPSED THE NOSE LANDING GEAR. THE ACFT THEN NOSED OVER.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900802029549A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900802029549A), Aug 2, 1990: Cessna 150M, Venice, FL, Substantial damage. Student failed to flare for landing on first solo. Bounced porpoised and nosed over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
