## Probable cause

IMPROPER MAINTENANCE REPAIR BY AN UNKNOWN PERSON THAT INITIATED THE ENGINE FAILURE AND THE FORCED LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, maneuvering - aerial application
  - fuel system,line fitting - failure,total (contributing factor)
  - maintenance,modification - improper, unknown (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Dragged wing,rotor,pod,float or tail/skid, landing - roll

## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED THAT WHILE EXECUTING AN 'AG TURN ' THE ENGINE FAILED AND HE ATTEMPTED TO LAND IN A BEAN FIELD. DURING THE LANDING ONE WING STRUCK THE GROUND AND THE AIRPLANE GROUND LOOPED. EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE REVEALED THAT A FUEL LINE FITTING TO THE CARBURETOR HAD FAILED DUE TO AN IMPROPER WELD.

- [Accident 19900824040289A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900824040289A), Aug 24, 1990: Scwzer G164A, Dundee, MS, Substantial damage. Reported engine failed on swath run a wing had caught in bean field vegatation. Caused cartwheel.

## Other investigations on N9650 (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW95LA361](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW95LA361), Aug 28, 1995: Grumman G-164A (N9650), Holyoke, CO, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's failure to maintain terrain clearance.
