## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S INADVERTENT DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIR BRAKES AT A LOW ALTITUDE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, approach - vfr pattern - base turn
  - speed brakes - inadvertent activation, pilot in command (cause)
  - airspeed - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - stall/mush - inattentive, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with object, descent - uncontrolled
  - object - residence

## Analysis

THE PILOT DEPARTED FROM RUNWAY 15 AND REMAINED IN A CLOSED LEFT TRAFFIC PATTERN. WITNESSES OBSERVED THE AIRPLANE ON AN EXTENDED DOWNWIND ABOVE A RESIDENTAL AREA BETWEEN 50 AND 150 FEET AGL. THE AIRPLANE WAS OBSERVED TO MAKE A LEFT TURN WITH AN ESTIMATED ANGLE OF BANK BETWEEN 45 AND 75 DEGREES. THE NOSE PITCHED DOWN 45 DEGREES AND THE AIRPLANE DESCENDED RAPIDLY. THE LEFT WING TIP COLLIDED WITH A ROOF TOP PRIOR TO THE AIRPLANE CRASHING ON THE ROOF. INVESTIGATION REVEALED THE FLAPERONS AND AIR BRAKE WERE EXTENDED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19901002043919A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19901002043919A), Oct 2, 1990: Amtr MARCOJ5, Clearwater, FL, Destroyed, 1 fatal. Stalled in steep turn on extended base leg in pattern. Dived into roof of a house. Relatively high stall speed.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
