## Probable cause

THE POOR IN FLIGHT DECISION OF THE PILOT TO FLY NEAR THUNDERSTORMS AND THEIR ASSOCIATED TURBULENCE RESULTING IN AN UNCONTROLLED DESCENT AND IN FLIGHT COLLISION WITH TERRAIN.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight encounter with weather, cruise - normal
  - weather condition - turbulence(thunderstorms)
  - flight into known adverse weather - intentional, pilot in command (cause)
  - in-flight planning/decision - poor, pilot in command (cause)
- Loss of control - in flight, cruise - normal
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

THE PILOT FLYING THE HOMEBUILT AIRPLANE ENCOUNTERED SEVERE TURBULENCE NEAR A THUNDERSTORM AND LOST CONTROL IN FLIGHT. THE AIRPLANE THEN DESCENDED UNCONTROLLED TO THE GROUND.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910827040139A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910827040139A), Aug 27, 1991: Amtrbg BAKENGDUCE, Land O Lakes, FL, Destroyed. Flew too near a thunderstorm . Encountered windshear and crashed.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
